Known as the dog with the smiling face the Samoyed are very affectionate and people oriented. The Sammy fits well into our Wisconsin climate for the activities such as sledding, biking, backpacking, walking and carting in most seasons except for the warmest days when both dogs and people are seeking an air conditioned place to relax.
The Samoyed is one of the oldest natural breeds of dog. Over thousands of years in the Siberian arctic the breed was developed for reindeer herding, sled pulling and hunting. The dog was an integral part of the family and shared the shelters of the nomadic owners. The name comes from the Siberian native people called the Samoyed. In Russia, these arctic natives continue to herd reindeer but are now called Nenets.
The Samoyed is an extremely hardy breed and can tolerate virtually any winter conditions. They are a working breed and they are unhappy if not exercised every day. The coat of the Samoyed is a double coat which combines hair with a dense wooly undercoat which can be spun into a yarn similar to angora. This yarn can be made into garments with excellent insulating qualities.
